Stevenson Leads Wire-to-Wire to win Emilie Mondor Memorial 5K Race for Women in Ottawa Nicole Stevenson wins for the second time in three years - she was second last year Toronto's Nicole Stevenson, a member of the Etobicoke Huskies Track Club, led from the gun to capture today's Emilie Mondor Memorial 5K Race for Women run from the Aviation Museum in the nation's capital. Stevenson, one of Canada's top female marathoners, established an eight second lead over a group of four runners by 1K and then hung on to win by 5.3 seconds over Kingston's Paula Wiltse, 16:567 to 17:2.0. London's Lanni Marchant, a member of the Ottawa Athletic Club Racing Team placed third in 17:08.6. Marilyn Arsenault of Victoria, BC, another Masters runner, was fourth in 17:31.8. Cynthia Wilson, a top triathlete, who recently won the Milton and Muskoka triathlons placed fifth in a personal best time of 17:41.4. After a month of rain and frequent thunderstorms, runners were greeted by sunny skies and calm winds for the third edition of the race, named after Emilie Mondor - one of Canada's top female runners, and the first Canadian woman to break 15:00 for 5K and an Athens Olympian - who was killed on a car accident in September of 2006 while on her way home to Mascouche, Quebec for a high-school reunion.
290 runners completed the race, 50 more than took part last year. 38 women ran under 20 minutes almost double the number of sub 20:00 female performances in all of the 5K races in Ottawa to-date this year. One of those who broke the 20:00 mark was Paula Hickman of Ottawa who turns 58 in July! Runners were competing for $7,650.00 in prize money including $100 "primes" for the leader at each kilometer - all taken by Stevenson. The Tri-City team of Stevenson, Wiltse and Arsenault took first place team honours while two teams from the Ottawa Athletic Club Racing Team took second (Marchant, Wilson and Liz Maguire) and third (Michelle Schuler, Jacqueline Sandoz and Lisa Balerna). There was also an accompanying 1K run for children 12 and under with 86 competitors.
Stevenson holds the course record for the race at 16:28.7, set in her win in 2006. The Ottawa Athletic Club Racing Team, a local women's running club, took 17 out of the 38 sub 20:00 performances , four in the top ten, third overall and third Masters and the second and third place team awards. April 7, 2008: Another review of the race from one of last year's runners: Emilie's Run is held in Ottawa in June to promote and encourage Women's running. It is named after Emilie Mondor, an incredibly talented young runner who was tragically killed in a car crash in the fall of 2006.I had the honor of meeting Emilie in the month before her death. She was one of the nicest and friendliest people you could ever meet with a real joy of running. The 5K race course itself is predominantly flat and fast. It has a slight elevation drop from start to finish, so on any reasonably decent day is a good course for a "PB". The race starts at the brow of a passover, so the first 1k is downhill, sure to get those legs turning over. It is out and back, with a slight downhill to the finish line, ending in front of the Airport museum. You have to love those downhill runs to the finish line! The course is along the scenic Ottawa Eastern parkway besides the Ottawa river and is closed to traffic. If you're not fast enough to be in the Elite field (and few of us are) you can see them fly by on the other side of the road as you make your way to the turnaround. Its exciting to watch the women leading the race instead of being lost among the men. The awards ceremony is held outside on the large grassy expanse besides the Airport museum. I ran this race last year and it was the perfect day for lounging in the sunshine after the race was over. Mind you it was windy last year - so not the perfect day for a PB. Raceday includes a kid's 1K , so families can make a day of it - run the race, visit the airport museum etc. I loved the race and will definitely be running it again this year - oh yea just one thing it is women's only so you do have to be female (sorry guys). March 21, 2008: The following is review of Emilie's Run written by one of last year's participants: More often than not, you have to seek out inspiration. As a runner, inspiration comes in many forms. Faster race times, your favourite sport "hero", a hard workout. Other times, inspiration can be the faces of hundreds of women, all running in pursuit of their personal best. Emilie's Run, a women's only 5 km race held in June in Ottawa and organized in memory of Canadian Olympian Emilie Mondor draws elite and recreational women from across Canada. The race embodies Emilie's love of running and continuous support of women in the sport. The out and back course is flat and fast. Starting from the Aviation Museum the course travels East along the Aviation parkway. The parkway is closed, and every runner is motivated by seeing their fellow competitors returning to the museum. There is a slight downgrade into the finish line, and the "fast" description is backed up by the fact that over 40 women broke 20 minutes in 2007. I ran the race in 2006 and posted a PB, being one of the women who broke 20 minutes! I was injured in 2007 but with great training this winter, I look forward to an even faster time in 2008. I am encouraging all of my friends, regardless of their speed, to come out and support women's running. Times ranged from 16 minutes to 51 minutes in 2007: it's a race that attracts the strongest female runners in the country but still makes the recreational athlete comfortable, and even better, inspired. Check it out at EmiliesRun.com. February 3, 2008: In preparation for Emilie's Run - The Emilie Mondor Memorial 5K Race For Women, which will be run on June 21st in Ottawa from the Aviation Museum, Anne Barrington will be writing a bi-weekly training blog. Anne is a Goodlife member and also a member of the Ottawa Athletic Club Racing Team (OACRacingTeam.com). Read her blog by clicking on the "Anne's Blog" link above. February 2, 2008: The race will again have timing mats at each kilometer so the results will show splits for every K. Race numbers 1 through 50 will be assigned on the basis of the top 50 placing in the 2007 race. January 22, 2008: Nicole Stevenson of Toronto, the 2006 race winner and 2nd place finisher from 2007, has indicated that she will be returning looking to recapture the race title. Registration:

Githuka held a nine second lead at 3K which Stevenson whittled down to two by the finish line. Githuka won in 16:37 to Stevenson's 16:39. Last year - in the RunnersWeb5K Race for Women - Stevenson won in 16:28 over Emily Tallen of Kingston who placed third this year in 16:55. 239 women completed the event (276 registered), an increase of 37 over 2006. 46 women ran 20:00 or faster compared to last year's 35 making the field one of, if not the fastest women's 5K races in Canada. There were 8 women sub 18:00 (7 in 2006) and 24 sub 19:00 (20 in 2006).
An accompanying 1K run for children 12 and under was held with 56 runners, walkers and toddlers in baby joggers completing the course.
