Athletics: Angela Whyte wins 100 hurdles gold medal at Texas Relays April 5, 2004 OTTAWA - Canada’s international success in the women’s 100-metre hurdles continued this past weekend as Angela Whyte of Edmonton won the gold medal in the event at the annual Texas Relays competition held in Austin. Whyte, a member of Canada’s world indoor team, clocked 12.79 seconds to cruise to the victory. Virginia Miller of the U.S., was second in 13.16 and Joyce Bates of the U.S., third in 13.22. "Right before the race I was very nervous,’’ said Whyte, 23, the number-two ranked Canadian in the event behind world champion Perdita Felicien. ‘’The Texas Relays is a phenomenal meet and with this field if you're not on your game, they will come and get you. I tried to just block everything out during my run. When I crossed the line and saw my time, I was very happy. I was glad to run this fast this early in the season; this will do a lot for my confidence." Other Canadian results at the event: Pierre Browne of Toronto was third in the men’s 100 dash in 10.22 seconds as was Canada’s men’s 4X400 relay with Tyler Christopher of Edmonton, Shane Niemi of Kamloops, B.C., Lawrence Ringwald of and Adam Kunkel of who clocked 3:04.54. Meanwhile in Overland Park, Kansas, Megan Huzzey of Victoria won the gold medal this weekend at the U.S., team trials for the IAAF World Race Walking World Cup scheduled for later this year. Huzzey made a strong surge in the final two kilometres to take the junior women 10 kilometre race in 50 minutes and 23 seconds. It was a personal best time for Huzzey and she also met the standard for the World Cup May 1-2 in Naumburg, Germany. Following Huzzey at the finish were Americans Maria Michta second in 50:46 and Katy Hayes, third in 50:47. In the men’s junior 10 kilometre race, Pierre-Luc Ménard of Dolbeau, Que., won the silver medal in 48:15 (despite having feet blisters and arriving late just the night before the race due to flight delays). Zakary Pollinger of the U.S., won decisively in 45:53 while his compatriot Troy Clark was third in 48:25. Marina Crivello of Montreal was 10th in the women’s senior 20 kilometre race. There were no Canadians in the men’s senior race. From AthleticsCanada.com.
