Athletics: Athletics Canada Names World Junior Team

(Ottawa, June 30, 2004) – Athletics Canada is pleased to announce the national team that will attend the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships in Grosetto, Italy, July 13 - 18, 2004. Twenty-one highly talented junior athletes will represent Canada, many of whom competed at the 2003 IAAF World Youth Championships last year in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

“The 21 athletes who have been selected to represent Canada at the world junior championships have achieved the IAAF standards and are among the finest athletes in their age class in the world” says world junior team head coach Bruce Pirnie. “I'm excited that both of our medal winners from last year's world youth championships -- shot putter Kyle Helf and 3000m steeplechaser Chris Winter -- have made the transition to the junior ranks, as well as 2002 world junior veteran Hank Palmer in the 100m and 200m”.

Selection to the team was based on meeting the IAAF qualifying standards, as well as being approved by Athletics Canada’s National Team Committee. The team will depart for Grosetto on July 8, 2004 and will return to Canada following the championship on July 19, 2004.
