Posted: December 14, 2004 Adventure Racing: 2005 Cross Karoo Extreme Triathlon Challenge South Africa.
The 2005 Cross Karoo Extreme Triathlon Challenge will start with the 88 km (55 mile) Comrades Marathon which is run between Durban, on the Indian Ocean, and Pietermaritzburg every year on 16 June. This is followed by a 2200 km (1 400 mile) non-stop non-assisted mountain bike stage along South Africa’s Freedom Trail starting in Pietermaritzburg the next morning. Participants must reach the finish of the mountain bike stage at Paarl outside Cape Town by 12 July. It will finish with the 4 day staged 208 km Berg River Canoe Marathon which starts in Paarl on 13 July and ends in the fishing village of Velddrif on the Atlantic coast on 16 July 2005. Almost the entire distance of the mountain bike stage is on dirt tracks. No seconding is permitted. Manned support stations providing accommodation, bedding, food and liquid supplements occur at regular intervals throughout the route. Stopping over at support stations is optional. Participants need carry no more than an adventure racing pack containing supplements for the day, mandatory foul weather wear and bike repair tools. Compulsory check points exist between support stations. Participants are tracked live with GPS trackers. Accommodation and seconding support are provided for the duration of the Berg River Canoe Marathon. Participants are required to attend the event breakfast on the first morning of the ride. The Challengers Dinner at the finish of the Berg River Canoe Marathon provides a good opportunity to finally unwind. Participants are advised to complete the mountain bike stage in groups of two. Entries are open to individuals and teams of two (one runs, both ride, one paddles). Entry numbers are limited by the inaccessibility of large parts of the route and the availability of accommodation at support stations Entry details:
