Athletics: Trammell seeks to pad rich Millrose resume

NEW YORK - 2003 Millrose Games 60-meter champion and two-time Olympic 110-meter hurdles silver medalist Terrence Trammell returns to Madison Square Garden Friday evening as he pursues his fourth overall Millrose Games title. Facing the likes of 2003 world championships relay gold medalist Darvis Patton, the multi-talented Trammell could have his hands full.

The Millrose men's 60-meter field was announced Wednesday, as well as the Olympian- and medal-winner-laden fields for all events at the 2005 Millrose Games, the second event of USA Track & Field's 2005 Indoor Visa Championship Series. The Millrose Games will be held Friday, Feb. 4, at Madison Square Garden and will be televised on NBC from 2-3:30 p.m., Eastern Time on Saturday, February 5.

Terrence the Terrible

Trammell has been merciless against his competition at the Millrose Games. In addition to his 60-meter title from 2003, he also won the 60-meter hurdles at the storied meet in 2001 and 2002. His 2001 winning time of 7.47 stood as the meet record until former training partner Allen Johnson ran 7.43 to win in 2004.

The best combined sprinter/hurdler in the world, the 28-year-old Trammell's resume is deep. He was a surprise Olympic silver medalist in the hurdles in 2000, but in 2001 he proved his talent was no fluke. Trammell took on both the 60m dash and hurdles during the '01 indoor season, where he dominated his competition and went on to win the world indoor hurdles title. The following year, he added the U.S., 60m dash title, and in 2003 he won his first World Outdoor Championships silver medal, this time in the hurdles.

Fast Field

But the Millrose sprint field for 2005 is more than solid. The 2003 world outdoor 200-meter silver medalist, Darvis "Doc" Patton also owns world outdoor gold in the 4x100m relay from 2003. Mardy Scales, the 2003 NCAA 100m champion, joins contenders that include 2001 World University Games gold medalist Marcus Brunson and former USA junior champion and NCAA All-American Leonard Scott.

Race for the Championship

All Millrose participants will be striving to make an impact on the Race for the Championships and the title of Visa Champion. Shot putter Adam Nelson is the leader among the men, while Danielle Carruthers is in the lead for the women.
