Athletics: Kyle Helf wins two gold at Canadian junior track and field championships

MONTREAL- Kyle Helf of Alliston, Ont., won gold medals in shotput and discus on Saturday at a rain-soaked Canadian junior track and field championships.

Helf threw 18.28 metres in the shotput and 49.85 in the discus. In both events, Mike Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont., and Rob Negrin of Vancouver were second and third respectively.

"I've been working on some new techniques in training but they were impossible to try here because of the weather," said Helf, a silver medallist at the world youth championships in 2003. "But I hadn't competed in a few weeks and I generally felt god about my showing."

In the men's 100, Justyn Warner of Etobicoke, Ont., was the winner in 10.56 with Marc Latouche of Mississauga, Ont., second in 10.71 and Michael Leblanc of New Brunswick third in 10.85.

"I'd been doing personal bests at almost every meet but it wasn't possible today with the conditions," said Warner, 18, who'll make his international debut at the Pan Am Championships in two weeks in Windsor, Ont. "My start was great and I felt very strong until the finish."

Genevieve Thibault of Quebec City clocked 12.02 seconds to win the women's 100-metre ahead of Rhonda Kaye Trusty of Mississauga, Ont., in second at 12.34 and Billie Whitegibson of Coquitlam, B.C., third at 12.37. It was Thibault's second gold.

Other winners in men's competition included Brian Cummins of Ottawa in the 400, David Holm of Calgary in the 800, Christopher Greenaway of St-Laurent, Que., in the long jump and Adam Wolkins of Shelburne, N.S., in the javelin.

Other winners in women's competition included Carline Muir of Etobicoke in the 400, Sherri Bourgon of Regina in the long jump, Kaitlin Andrews of Sudbury, Ont., in the shotput, Samantha Piquette of Ottawa in the javelin and Lydia Willemse of Sarnia, Ont., who set a meet record in the 2,000 steeplechase.
