Posted: July 10, 2005 Athletics: Genevieve Thibault completes triple gold performance at the Canadian junior track and field championships MONTREAL- Genevieve Thibault of Quebec City won the women's 200-metre sprint Sunday for her third gold medal this weekend at the Canadian junior track and field championships which were held in hot and humid conditions at the Claude-Robillard-Centre. Thibault, also the 100 and 100 hurdles victor, clocked 24.12 seconds finishing ahead of Carline Muir of Etobicoke, Ont., second in 24.37 and Omove Ugiabe of Etobicoke third in 24.79. Other winners Sunday in women's competition included Corrie Fell of Vancouver in the 400 hurdles, Nicole Edwards of Winnipeg in the 1,500, Rachel Lavallee of Peterborough, Ont., in the 10-kilomere racewalk, Camille Richard of Vancouver in the triple jump and Marie-Eve Boissell of St-Jean, Que., in the hammer throw. On the men's side, Justyn Warner of Etobicoke and Mike Woods of Ottawa each captured a second gold in the 200 and 1,500 metre races respectively. Warner, the 100 winner Saturday, clocked 20.95 with Gavin Smellie of Mississauga second at 21.15 and Brian Barnett of Edmonton third at 21.44. In the 1, 500 Woods prevailed in 3:56.49 with Braden Novakowski of Belleville, Ont., second in 3:58.67 and Jake Gallagher of Dartmouth, N.S., third in 3:59.16. "The heat was a huge factor in the race," said Woods, the 5,000-metre winner Friday. "The race was very strategic and I managed to make it work out to my advantage. The 1,500 and the mile has been my main focus this year and even though the time was slow today, that's o.k." Other winners in men's competition included Trent Ratzlaff of Calgary in the 400, Alexandre Genest of Lac-au-Sable in the 3,000 steeplechase, Pierre-Luc Menard of Saguenay, Que., in the 10 kilometre racewalk, Sean Stacy of Lethbridge, Alta., in the men's hammer throw and Philip Garratt of Toronto in the pole vault. The competition was also the selection trials for the Pan American junior track and field championships July 29-31 in Windsor, Ont.
