Posted: July 17, 2005 Athletics: Vancouver's Elizabeth Gleadle smashes Canadian record placing fifth in javelin at world youth track and field championships MARRAKESH, Morocco- Elizabeth Gleadle of Vancouver posted Canada's best result this week at the world youth track and field championships on Sunday placing fifth and breaking the Canadian youth record in the women's javelin. Zhang Li of China won the gold medal reaching 56.66 metres, Vira Rebryk of the Ukraine was second at 56.16 and Yanet Cruz of Cuba third at 51.66. Ynthi Coetzee of South Africa was fourth at 51.10 and Gleadle followed at 50.53 which obliterated the previous national youth mark of 42.25 set by Elaine Dumas in 2003. Two Canadians were in the 1,500 final won by Mansoor Ali Belal who led Bahrain to a 1-2 finish clocking 3:36.98. Khalil Bader Bader was second in 3:43.70 and Abubaker Kaki of Sudan third in 3:45.06. Justin Marpole-Bird of Vancouver was eighth in 3:54.55 and Allan Brett of Ottawa 12th in 4:05.25. Comment on this story. |
