Posted: November 15, 2005 Athletics: Kevin Tyler receives CAC Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award (Ottawa, ON) Athletics Canada is pleased to announce that Kevin Tyler of Edmonton Alberta was recognized as one of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award recipients. The awards were presented as part of the Coaching Association of Canada’s Sport Leadership conference. The Coaching Excellence Awards are presented to coaches whose athletes won medals over the past year at open World Championships, Olympic Games, Special Olympics, World Games, or Paralympic Games. Kevin Tyler on receiving the Coaching Excellence Award; "I am really honored to be nominated by Athletics Canada and recognized by the Coaching Association of Canada alongside such an outstanding group of coaches." Tyler’s excellent coaching helps keep notable Canadian athletes such as Tyler Christopher, Adam Kunkel, and Carlene Muir, training on Canadian soil. "The award is further evidence that as a sport we are capable of building outstanding programs right here in Canada." "This last season working with Tyler Christopher has been truly rewarding and enjoyable. I am really looking forward to future seasons with him and striving for similar successes." Tyler Christopher won the bronze medal at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Christopher is ranked fourth in the world in the 400 meters and first in Canada, and is the Canadian record holder in the 400 meters. Kunkel is a two-time Canadian junior champion in the 400 meter hurdles and 4X400 meter and a two-time Canadian senior champion in the 400 meter hurdles. Muir was second at the 2005 Pan Am Jr. Championships in the 400 meter, and was ranked number one in Canada amongst seniors in 2005. Carlene turned down a full ride scholarship from Texas A&M to stay and train in Canada with Kevin Tyler. Kevin Tyler is a former national team track and bobsleigh athlete and one of Canada’s top coaches, having coached a number of elite athletes. He has also worked at the grassroots level to guide international Olympians through the IOC Solidarity Program. Kevin Tyler is currently the Director of The Canadian Athletic Coaching Centre at the University of Alberta. Comment on this story. |
