Posted: December 14, 2005 Athletics: USATF takes note of CAS bans of Montgomery and Gaines INDIANAPOLIS - Following action taken by the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier today to hand down two-year bans for doping violations for sprinters Tim Montgomery and Chryste Gaines, USA Track & Field on Tuesday announced that Maurice Greene's time of 9.79 seconds, run in 1998, has been restored as the American men's 100m record and Bernard Williams is the 2001 USA Outdoor 100m champion. The Court of Arbitration for Sport opinions detail the participation of Montgomery and Gaines in a "wide-ranging doping conspiracy" in connection with the Balco Lab and negate results for Montgomery from March 31, 2001 to the present, and Gaines beginning on November 30, 2003. The disqualifications include Montgomery's 100m American record of 9.78, run in 2002, which was the world record when he ran it. Montgomery's 2001 USA Outdoor 100m title now goes to then runner-up Bernard Williams. Curtis Johnson moves from third to second place, and Dennis Mitchell moves up from fourth to third place. Gaines' fifth-place finish at the 2004 USA Indoor Championships has been annulled. Sixth-place finisher Inger Miller moves to fifth place. "It is sad when any athlete makes the tragic decision to cheat, because it robs other athletes of their deserved recognition and hurts our sport," said USATF CEO Craig Masback. "We thank the CAS panel for its careful review of these cases." Comment on this story. |
