Posted: December 15, 2005 Triathlon: Brampton will host 2006 National Triathlon Championships Canada Day weekend for the vibrant city of Brampton just got bigger with the announcement they are hosting the 2006 National Triathlon Championships. Located 20 km north-west of Toronto, Brampton will be the site of the of he 2006 ITU Pan American Cup, the National Age Group and Elite Championships and Junior World Qualifiers. The Canadian elite athletes participating include, the Men’s and Women’s defending champions from a year ago, Simon Whitfield from Victoria B.C. and Samantha McGlone from Otterburn Park, Quebec. Whitfield and McGlone have both confirmed their entry at this prestigious event which is expected to have the largest elite field in Canadian history. The 6 members of the 2006 Commonwealth games team will also be participating highlighted by Jill Savege and Brent McMahon both with a world ranking in the top 40. Triathlon Canada’s Executive Director, Alan Trivett, who was inducted into the city of Brampton’s Sports’ Hall of Fame in 2003, is delighted his home town is hosting such a big race. “This event continues to grow in size and stature every year and I know this will be a win-win for the city of Brampton and the Triathlon Community.” The July 1st and 2nd events are expected to attract 1500 athletes from around the world and generate an economic spin-off in excess of one million dollars for the local community. The C3 Canadian Cross Training Club will host the event at Brampton’s Professor’s Lake Park “Our goal is to make the 2006 Canadian Championships the best ever,” said C3 Chairman Gary Hutchinson. Along with the best age group, junior and elite athletes in the country, C3 will also be hosting their fun, participation based Tri-Cool Relay races. These short fun races allow three individual athletes to do the event as a relay team. “It’s these kinds of events that will make these championships a smashing success,” says Race Director, Tom Howlett. Howlett felt that Brampton and its 400,000 residents was the perfect city for the National Championships. “You couldn’t pick a better site to have this race. It really is the perfect venue.
