Posted: February 21, 2006 Adventure Racing: Wild Miles Adventure Relay Set For April 29-30, 2006 Teams of 10 or Really Crazy Teams of 5 Are Now Forming CARLSBAD, Calif. (February 21, 2006) – The second annual Wild Miles Adventure Relay has been scheduled for April 29-30, 2006, announced event organizer, In Motion, Inc. The continuous two-day 183-mile running relay takes place in the Southern California desert and consists of 150 teams of ten or five runners each. The only relay of its kind in the country, the Wild Miles Adventure Relay is known to live up to its name. “Last year’s participants told us that the weekend was the hardest race they’ve ever done but a total blast and most of the teams are eager to return,” said Lynn Flanagan, president of In Motion, Inc. “It’s like running through the Wild West with nine of your best buddies.” The unique course starts in Borrego Springs, a small resort town nestled between the Santa Rosa Mountains in the Anza-Borrego Desert about 85 miles due east of San Diego. It then winds its way through sand dunes, mountains, forests and canyons before finishing in the quaint town of Pine Valley. The challenging but scenic course consists of 30 legs with distances ranging from three to 13.1 miles and is run primarily on rural back roads. Team members run anywhere from three to six legs each. The Wild Miles Adventure Relay offers a vast array of sights and experiences. Runners are treated to stunning vistas of blooming wildflowers, cacti and palm groves. Depending on the time of day or night, runners may also encounter mule deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes, jack rabbits, hawks, tarantulas and scorpions during their trek through the desert. Temperatures are expected to dip to the low 40’s during the night and climb to the mid-eighties during the day. Individuals without a team are encouraged to visit the race web site message board where teams oftentimes advertise the need for additional members. “It’s a great way to meet new people and to energize an otherwise monotonous running program,” said Flanagan. The relay adventure will culminate at the Finisher’s Bash in Pine Valley, a quaint San Diego hamlet known for its rustic charm. At the Bash, team members cross the finish line together and receive well-deserved applause, food, beer, entertainment, tee shirts and finisher’s medals. The event benefits the Challenged Athlete Foundation, a non-profit organization which provides opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities who wish to pursue an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics. Registration is now open. Team divisions include: Corporate, Public Service, Military, Open and Masters.
