Athletics: Musil earns a second victory on day four of the 2006 USA Youth Champs

GREENSBORO -Samantha Musil added to her medal count on day four of the 2006 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T State University.

The Championships are a national competition with entry based upon qualifying standards for each event and have the same age divisions as the USATF Junior Olympic program. Bantam (10 and under), Midget (11-12), Youth (13-14), Intermediate (15-16) and Young Men/Women (17-18). In addition, this year's meet will serve as one of the selection pool competitions for the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Samantha Musil of the Cornhusker Flyers continued her winning weekend adding another gold medal to her collection. Musil won the Young Women's shot put with a toss of 13.10 meters/ 42 feet 11.75 inches. She won the Young Women's discus throw on Thursday with a distance of 42.18 meters/138 feet 5 inches. Musil is scheduled to compete in the Young Women's javelin throw Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Josiah Jenkins and Kaylor Murray won their respective age divisions in the 3,000 meters. Jenkins led the Midget Boys field in 10 minuets 18.22 seconds. Murray ran 11:11.92 to win the Midget Girls title.

Katie Stoever, of Tulsa, Okla., won the Young Women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.50 meters/11 feet 5.75 inches. "It was horrible. I've jumped 12 feet for four meets in a row, I should have stayed on the pole I'm used to jumping 12 feet on," said Stoever. "I'm happy with first, but I should have done better."

In the prelims of the 400 meter dash, Justin Chambers of Titans Track lead the Intermediate Boys division in 48.75 seconds. Behind Chambers was Danzell Fortson in 48.91. Anjelica Weaver of Quiet Fire has the fastest time of 56.66, out of the first round of the Youth Girls division.

Dante Neil of Quicksilver won the Young Men's high jump with a height of 2.05 meters/6 feet 8.75 inches. Jonathan Clark of Quiet Fire placed second at 1.95m/6-4.75.

In the Midget Boys high jump, Nicholas Simmons of The Norfolk Real Deal Track Club dominated the field with a winning clearance of 1.60 meters/5 feet 3 inches. Simmons bypassed a height of 1.65m/5-05 to challenge the 26-year-old meet record of 1.75m/5-8.75 set by David Mosley in 1979, but narrowly nicked the bar on his final attempt. "My back was hurting and I already won the event so I wanted to try for the record," said Simmons.

In the Intermediate Boys shot put Michael Barbas of the Northwest Flyers launched a throw of 17.82 meters/58 feet 5.75 inches to take home the title. "It felt like a good throw. I came into today with the hopes of a (personal record) and the hope of winning the event," said Barbas.

Adam Montague won the Young Men's javelin with a distance of 59.50 meters/195 feet 2 inches. Colin Kennedy came in second with a throw of 54.45m/178-08.
