Posted: July 11, 2006 Athletics: Honolulu Marathon's Website Streamlined by Active Network 2006 online registration open HONOLULU - (July 3, 2006) - The Honolulu Marathon is making a change in its race technology that's bound to please participants in the 34th running of the event on Sunday, Dec. 10. The race has hired The Active Network of San Diego, a leading online event registrations provider, to streamline all aspects of its busy 10-year-old website. Active's first move was to make secure online registration for the marathon and its concurrent 10 kilometer Race Day Walk easy and fast. Runners and walkers can register at HonoluluMarathon.org or Active.com until Nov. 26. E-mail confirmation is immediate. "We knew that many of the large races were using services from Active and were happy with the results," said Dr. Jim Barahal, approaching his 20th race as president of the Honolulu Marathon. In the past the Honolulu Marathon relied on in-house technology services. "It has been a challenge for our in-house team to create and manage the technical systems required to support online registration and support our website," said Barahal. "Our decision to use Active gives us the ability to dedicate the majority of our time to our runners, sponsors and race operations." In 2005, the Honolulu Marathon was the nation's 3rd largest marathon and world's 6th largest. There were 28,408 entries for the marathon and 5,444 for the Race Day Walk. Active, which will process an estimated 4.5 million registration transactions for endurance sports in 2006, counts the world's 2nd largest marathon, The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, among its prominent clients. The 2007 Chevron Houston Marathon, the City of Los Angeles Marathon, Long Beach International City Bank Marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, the New Las Vegas Marathon, P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona and the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, San Diego are also clients of Active. "Using Active's data management services, the Honolulu Marathon can access, track and manage registrant data from a single system, streamline administration and communicate more easily with registrants and sponsors," said Active's chief operating spokesperson Jon Belmonte. Active plans to undertake a user-friendly redesign of the marathon's website and make it easy for marathon staff to independently do updates to the new site. "Through Active's one-click system for website publishing, race staff at any level will be able to manage content for the new site, updating or adding information as often as needed without IT or technical support," added Belmonte.
