Athletics: Wariner Named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS- Jeremy Wariner has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the men's 400 meters Saturday at the Meeting Gaz de France in Paris, part of the IAAF's Golden League series.

The 2004 Olympic gold medalist and 2005 World champion, Wariner dominated the field running a personal best and world-leading 43.91 seconds, winning by over one second. It was the fastest time in the world since the 2000 Olympics.

Also at the Meeting Gaz de France, two-time Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammell won the 110 meter hurdles in a world-leading 13.06 seconds.

2005 World Outdoor silver medalist and 2006 Visa champion Lashinda Demus dominated the field in the women's 400 meter hurdles Monday, easily winning in a world-leading, personal-best time of 53.02 seconds at the Athens Super Grand Prix.

Four-time U.S. champion Kim Kreiner again improved upon her American Record in the women's javelin with her second place heave of 62.44 meters/204 feet 10 inches Thursday at the Aarhus Games in Denmark. This marks the fifth time that Kreiner has broken her record this year, improving upon her previous record of 62.43m set at the U.S. Championships on June 23.

2004 World Junior 200m and 2006 NCAA 200m champion Shalonda Solomon won the 200 meters (22.90 seconds) and was runner-up in the 100 meters (11.39) at the 2006 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Track and Field Championships at the Panamerican Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Solomon was also part of the winning 4x100 meter relay team who claimed the gold in 43.53.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
