Highlights for August include:

  • Still a few months to go before ING New York City Marathon race day, but thousands are training and looking forward to that “First Avenue Experience”.
  • NYRR CEO & President Mary Wittenberg feels the popularity of the ING NYC Marathon is due to the longstanding NYRR tradition of treating the six hour runners with the same warmth and enthusiasm as the elite runners of the world.
  • Multi-sport athletes take over the City in the Nautica New York City Triathlon presented by Toyota. After the Hudson River swim, it’s a cycling leg up and down the West Side Drive, then a loop of Central Park.
  • Less is more sometimes. NYC Triathlon weekend featured the Underwear Run, a short jaunt in your shorts, hosted by the Naked Cowboy of Times Square fame.
  • The culmination of the multi-week V-day festival was celebrated with a 5K race in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, the Run Until The Violence Stops: NYC . Victory over Violence.
  • Ann Hinegardner, NYRR SVP, Business Development and Marketing Strategy, feels “…a participatory sport such as running is a great way to get the message out about the importance of programs that address violence against women.”
  • A Michelob Ultra Great Moment in Racing - the 2005 New York City Triathlon. A top pro women’s field battles right from the start all the way to the final yards, and the champion emerges with the finish line in sight.
  • The Continental Airlines International Friendship Run, part of ING New York City Marathon weekend, is a celebration of the worldwide kinship of the running community.
  • Over to Great Britain for the latest in elite level international competition - the Great Women’s Run from Sunderland in northeast England, where an Olympic champion is tested to the limit.
