August 19th 2006, BEIJING - Led by sprint silver medallists Brian Barnett of Edmonton and Justyn Warner of Markham, Ont., Canada qualified for the final in the men’s 4X100 relay on Saturday at the world junior track and field championships.
Warner and Barnett, both with silver medals this week in the 100 and 200 sprint respectively, along with Oluseyi Smith and Todd Pyper, both of Ottawa, clocked 39.64 seconds. The time also eclipsed the previous 39.90 national junior record which stood since 1994.
The Canadians were second in their semifinal heat to the U.S., (39.50) and posted the fourth fastest time overall. Jamaica and Britain clocked the fastest two times at 39.18 and 39.30.
However for Sunday’s final, the Canadian squad will likely be without Pyper. He was injured warming-up for the 4X400 relay when an Australian runner ran into him and cut his leg with his cleats, requiring stitches.
Pyper was replaced in the 4X400 semi by decathlete Reid Gustavson of Vancouver. The Canadians were disqualified along with Germany and Saudi Arabia in the heat but wouldn’t have advanced regardless because of their time. The other relay members were Barnett, Geoffrey Harris of Halifax and Andrew Dargie of Calgary.
Dargie, a finalist in the 400-metre earlier this week, is set to replace Pyper in Sunday’s 4X100 final.
In the women’s javelin final, Elizabeth Gleadle of Vancouver was 12th while in the heptathlon Brianne Theisen of Humboldt, Sask., was 17th.
Canada was eliminated in the women’s 4X100 and 4X400 relay semis. The runners in the 4X100 were Whitney Wellington of Surrey, B.C., Carlene Muir of Toronto, Phylicia George of Markham and Kimberley Hyacinthe of Lachenaie, Que. In the 4X400 it was Muir, Jennifer Biewald of Ottawa, Corri-Ann Campbell-Fell of Vancouver and Sarah Wells of Unionville, Ont.
Competition ends Sunday.
