Athletics: Kenyan multi-marathon winner to run Toronto Marathon to fight AIDS

(Toronto, ON; 09/22/2006) - On Sunday, October 15, men and women committed to making a difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa will take to the streets for the 12th annual Toronto Marathon. As part of Listen to the DrummingŠ, a fundraising campaign organized by the Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs, multi-marathon winner Joseph Nderitu of Kenya will run to show his commitment to raise funds in support of youth empowerment and HIV/AIDS prevention programs in South Africa, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe.

"With the right tools of prevention and education, we can help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS among youth," says Liz Donnery, fundraising coordinator of ICA Canada. "We are asking runners, walkers, relay teams and all supporters to join with us in raising $100,000 to provide vulnerable youth with new capacities for achieving hope."

Toronto Marathon runners, walkers, and relay teams will undertake either a 5km Run/Walk, a 21km half marathon, or the full 42km. Runners commit to raising a minimum of $100 in pledges and those raising over $1,000 are entered into a draw to win a trip to Africa. All proceeds go to the Institute of Cultural Affairs in support of HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
