OTTAWA – Athletics Canada is proud to announce today that, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command and the Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre, the Royal Canadian Legion Coaching Academy will take place in Oromocto, New Brunswick in conjunction with the 2007 Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships.

The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field Program is a central foundation piece of youth development and talent identification. Athletics Canada is committed to providing the best possible clinics and camp leaders for the athlete clinics and the coaching education seminars. Bruce Pirnie, Development Programs, Athletics Canada; “Athletics Canada and the Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre look forward to working with the Royal Canadian Legion to provide this annual event which will be open to all development level coaching across Canada.” Pirnie adds; “This is an exciting partnership, a win-win program that will not only enhance the educational opportunities for our coaches but will provide additional value for the team coaches who annually volunteer their time with the Legion program.”
The 2007 Legion Nationals will take place in Oromocto, New Brunswick August 8 to 14.
The Legion Nationals and athletic camps are run by approximately 100 volunteers, without whom the program could not operate. The Legion's annual commitment of $450,000 helps sponsor thousands of young men and women in track and field programs across the country. In addition, branches and provincial commands also sponsor numerous provincially and nationally sanctioned events and track and field clubs. The provincial camps are where the athletes are chosen to attend the national event. Numerous athletes who have attended the Legion camps and Championships have gone onto represent Canada at prestigious international events such as:

- Atlee Mahorn – 100m / 200m
- Charmaine Crooks – 400m / 800m
- Émilie Mondor – 800m / 1500m / 5000m
- Glenroy Gilbert – 100m
- Kevin Sullivan – 800m / 1500m
- Mark McKoy – 110m hurdles
- Robert Esmie – 100m
- Shane Niemi – 400m / Long jump
Athletics Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of track and field including cross-country running, road running and road racing. The association believes in physical health and fitness, individual excellence and personal growth, individual development beyond sport, as well as inclusiveness and integrity.
