Running: Jenny Hadfield Named Official Coach For The Antarctica Marathon

Boston (December 5, 2006) – Jenny Hadfield has been named the official coach for the 2007 Antarctica Marathon and Half Marathon, announced event organizer Marathon Tours and Travel. The 8th Antarctica Marathon is scheduled for February 26, 2007.

Staged on the darkest, windiest, most remote continent on earth, the Antarctica Marathon features a grueling but spectacularly scenic two-loop course which takes participants up and down a glacier and through the grounds of Russian, Chinese, Uruguayan and Chilean research bases. The sold-out annual event takes place on King George Island, located off the Antarctic Peninsula.

“The Antarctica Marathon offers some of the most challenging and volatile racing conditions in the world,” said Thom Gilligan, race director and president of Marathon Tours and Travel. “Coach Jenny is unequivocally qualified to properly train and motivate the participants to their marathon finish of a lifetime.”

A published author, writer, coach, speaker and endurance athlete, Hadfield holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and a master’s degree in exercise science. A world-class adventure racer, Hadfield has finished over 30 marathons, including the Antarctica Marathon.

The Antarctica Marathon’s tumultuous summertime weather can range from blizzard conditions to above-freezing temperatures. “I’ve run the 2003 Antarctica Marathon in 40 mph winds and knee-to-hip deep snow and the 2005 event in ankle-deep mud and rain,” Hadfield said. “It’s surely an unpredictable and unforgettable adventure.”

Designed specifically for the Antarctic’s conditions and terrain, Hadfield’s training programs offer specific schedules for runners of varying abilities as well as tips on gear and race-day strategy.

One of the most challenging aspects of the event is simply getting to it. Two converted Russian research vessels will ferry the runners from Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, through the Beagle Channel and across the Drake Passage. The two-week expedition also includes landings in remote areas to view seal colonies and penguin rookeries and opportunities to kayak and camp overnight on the icy continent.

Hadfield will also serve as the official coach for Team Capella. Team Capella consists of three Capella University students chosen to compete in the upcoming Antarctica Marathon. Capella, an accredited online university, is the presenting sponsor of the marathon.
