MINNEAPOLIS - (December 6, 2006) - USA Track & Field has selected Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. to host the 2007 USA Men's and 2008 USA Women's 10 Mile National Championship and the 2008 USA Men's Marathon Championship events. The announcements were made during the 28th USA Track & Field Annual Meeting last week in Indianapolis.
"USATF is delighted to work with the Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. (TCM) organization in presenting the 2007 USA Men's National 10 Mile Championship and the 2008 USA Men's Marathon Championship events. Our committee voted to award these championship events to TCM because of their long history of support for USA athletes, development of USA distance running and the quality of their event presentation and attention to detail," said Glenn Latimer, USATF Men's Long Distance Running Chair.
The 2007 Medtronic TC 10 Mile takes place Sunday, October 7, and race officials expect a very competitive field. "The timing of hosting the USA Men's 10 Mile Championship will bring top athletes from all over the United States, as they prepare for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men's Marathon during the New York City Marathon weekend of November 2, 2007. It will provide an opportunity to show case the Twin Cities," said Virginia Brophy Achman, Executive Director, Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.
The 2007 USA Men's 10 Mile Championship prize purse totals $25,000 for the top male finishers of the Medtronic TC 10 Mile.
The prize purse for the 2008 USA Women's 10 Mile Championship - slated for Sunday, October 5 - will also total $25,000 for the top female finishers of the Medtronic TC 10 Mile. Elizabeth Phillips, USATF Women's Long Distance Running Chair, said this is the first women's 10 mile national championship since Park Forest Scenic 10 hosted the event in 1999.
"At the recent USATF annual meeting, runners were very enthusiastic to have Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. host this event because they are treated extremely well and there is such great spectator support. We thank Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. for their support of all USATF programs," Phillips said.
As 2008 USA Men's Marathon Championship host, Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. will offer an $81,000 prize purse to the top male finishers of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, set for Sunday, October 5 in the Twin Cities.
