BOSTON (Dec. 7) – Tirunesh Dibaba, the young superstar who brought a sell-out crowd to its feet with a 5000-meter World Record here two years ago, will be among the headliners at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 27, organizers announced today. Tickets for the 12th annual Olympic-style event go on sale today.
Dibaba, the reigning World Champion at both 5000 meters and 10,000 meters outdoors, appears destined to become one of the greatest female distance runners in history. The 21-year-old Ethiopian has already won three World Cross Country Championships and a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics at 5000 meters in addition to her historic double at the 2005 World Championships, where she became the first athlete, male or female, ever to win titles at both 5000 and 10,000.
Since the Reebok Boston Indoor Games began in 1996, a total of 90 Olympic and World Championship medalists have competed in the event, which has also played host to four World Records and eight American Records. In addition, last year’s event featured the deepest men’s indoor mile field ever assembled, shattering the previous mark (eight) with 11 athletes breaking the 4-minute barrier.
Other top athletes who have competed here over the past decade include Olympic gold medalists Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Carolina Kluft, Stacy Dragila, Maurice Greene, Gail Devers, and Derartu Tulu, plus American favorites John Godina, Adam Nelson, Suzy Favor Hamilton, Joetta Clark and Johnny Gray. More athletes for the 2007 event will be announced soon.
Sponsored by Reebok International Ltd., with its world headquarters in Canton, Mass., the event is produced by Global Athletics & Marketing, Inc., an athlete-representation and events firm based in Boston.
The 12th-annual Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the first stop in USA Track & Field’s Visa Championship Series, will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College, 1350 Tremont St., beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. Tickets at $60, $40 and $20 and information are now available on-line at www.BostonIndoorGames.com or by calling 1-877-TIX-TRAC.
