Running in cool and wet conditions, Galen Rupp won the Zatopek 10,000m in Melbourne today, the signature event of the Telstra Zatopek Classic.
The 20-year-old Rupp, the U.S. junior record holder in the event who competes for the University of Oregon, won handily in 28:28.18, well ahead of compatriot Bret Schoolmeester who clocked 28:46.26.
“I was hoping to run a little faster, closer to 28 minutes but this is okay," said Rupp, who was sixth at last month's NCAA Cross Country Championships. Rupp's was the first victory by an American in the event's 45 year history.
The women's 10,000 was won by Jessica Ruthe of New Zealand in 33:04.52, well ahead of Australian Lisa Jane Weightman (33:25.90).
