FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former Arkansas student-athlete and assistant coach Stanley Redwine has been named the U.S. men's head coach for the 2007 Pan Am Games, which will be held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, July 13-29. Redwine is in his seventh season at the helm of the University of Kansas track and field programs.
During Redwine’s 11-year tenure as an assistant coach at Arkansas, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 through 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA champions in hurdle and sprint events. Among those All-Americans are three-time NCAA indoor and outdoor champion in the 400 meters, Calvin Davis; three-time NCAA champion in the 400 meters and 500 meters, Robbie Haley; and seven-time All-American sprinter, Jimmy French.
Before becoming a coach at Arkansas, Redwine placed his name in the Razorback history books as a 400-meter, 600-yard and 800-meter runner from 1980-83. Redwine was a four-time All-American and was named UA's Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. During his freshman season, he captured the Southwest Conference titles in the indoor 600-yard run (1:10.52) and was a member of the outdoor conference champion 4x400-meter relay team. The next year, Redwine once again became the 600-yard run champion, improving his time to 1:09.97. As a senior, he was a three-time conference champion in the 800-meter run (1:50.15), 880-yard run (1:50.96) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:14.69).
As a coach, Redwine served as an assistant coach for the U.S. at the 2003 Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He coached the men's and women's distance runners at the games under the direction of Arizona's Fred Harvey and Purdue's Monica Garvey. As a competitor, Redwine competed in the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter events, capturing two silver medals at two Goodwill Games and two bronze medals at two Pan Am Games. He also was a member of World Championship track teams in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993, and is a two-time U.S. 800-meter Champion.
In his new position with the Pan Am Games, Redwine will work with the top-two finishers in the each event at U.S. Championships in July.
