Less than two weeks remain until the inaugural Orca Challenge Wanaka and professional athletes have already started to arrive on New Zealand’s South Island to check out the course.
Wetsuit giant Orca will be backing the Jan. 20 race as title sponsor and a prize purse of 50,000 euros (US$65,380) will be up for grabs among the professionals.
“Orca Challenge Wanaka gives Kiwis of all abilities the opportunity to test themselves on a tough course and against some of the world’s best athletes, helping continue the exponential growth in this inspirational sport,” said Orca CEO Scott Unsworth. “The Orca team will be down there cheering all the athletes on and introducing the latest in long-distance technology with our Orca 3.8 wetsuit, incorporating the world-first breathable AirRelease system.”
The Cycle Surgery, with shops in Invercargill, Dunedin, Middlemarch, Cromwell and Nelson, and Merida Bikes have signed a three-year deal as bike course sponsor. The Cycle Surgery will also provide on-course support during the bike ride.
The course includes a 3.8km swim in Lake Wanaka, a one-lap, 180km bike ride through Queenstown’s Lakes District and a two-lap, 42.2km run along the lake’s edge and the Clutha River. Learn more at www.challenge-queenstown.com.
