First Sell-Out in 17 Race Starts
CARLSBAD, Calif. (January 17, 2007) – The Carlsbad Marathon’ s popular 13.1-mile sidekick, the Carlsbad Half Marathon, has reached its 7,000-runner capacity and has closed registration. It is the first time the event has sold out in its 17-year history.
The Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon are set for Sunday, January 21, 2007. Over 10,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the race weekend festivities, which include the Keebler Kid’s Marathon Mile, scheduled for Saturday, January 20th at LEGOLAND® California.
“We are thrilled to have reached this milestone but the downside is that we now have to disappoint people who still want to enter,” said Lynn Flanagan, race director and president of In Motion, Inc., the event organizer.
Flanagan credits a number of reasons for the increase in the half marathon’s popularity. “Half marathons across the country have grown in popularity. Apparently the San Diego Half Marathon Triple Crown, which we created last year, is on many people’s goal lists this year.”
The San Diego Half Marathon Triple Crown medal is awarded to participants who finish the Carlsbad Marathon or Half Marathon, the La Jolla Half Marathon (April 22, 2007) and the America’s Finest City Half Marathon (August 19, 2007) in the same calendar year. Over 800 runners were awarded their Triple Crown medals in 2006, the series’ inaugural year.
Featuring stunning views of the Pacific coastline, the out-and-back marathon and half marathon courses offer the best of picturesque North San Diego County. The races start and finish at Westfield Shoppingtown Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad. Both events start at 7:30 am.
In addition to the run/walk events, a Health and Fitness Expo will be held on Friday (2:00 pm to 6:00 p.m.), Saturday (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and Sunday, (8:00 a.m. to noon) under the Big Top at Westfield Shoppingtown Plaza Camino Real, located at 2525 El Camino Real in Carlsbad.
The Keebler Kids Marathon Mile will take place at 8:00 a.m. with raCe-day registration starting at 7:00 am.
Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon sponsors include: NBC 7/39, LEGOLAND California, Citibank, Keebler, News Radio 600 KOGO, KYXY 96.5, Brooks, The Running Center, Ultima, Overland Storage, Accel Gel, OptiMSM, Enterprise rent-a-car and UltraStar Cinemas.
