Employee benefits giant, CIGNA, will return as the title sponsor of the Falmouth Road Race, organizers announced late yesterday. It will be the second consecutive year that CIGNA will sponsor the event, scheduled for Sunday, August 12 in Falmouth, Mass.

The sponsorship will actually come from CIGNA Group Insurance, which includes disability, life and accident insurance, and CIGNA Dental, organizers said in a press release.

"We are thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Falmouth Road Race in 2007, a race nationally renowned for offering a first-class running weekend for recreational runners and elite competitors alike," said Karen S. Rohan, CIGNA Group and Dental Insurance president, in a prepared statement. "CIGNA has a very strong commitment to supporting people of all abilities in leading healthy and productive lives. We are pleased to sponsor this outstanding road race again as it continues to encourage people from all over the world to become more actively engaged in health and wellness."

The Falmouth Road Race will celebrate its 35th running this year, and it remains one of the premier road races in the United States. The seven mile course, which winds along the southern coast of Cape Cod from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights, is both challenging and beautiful. Former winners include such stars as Khalid Khannouchi, Benson Masya, Joan Samuelson, Lynn Jennings, Alberto Salazar, Bill Rodgers, Catherine Ndereba and Lornah Kiplagat. Defending champions are Gilbert Okari, who has prevailed the last three years in a row, and Alevtina Ivanova.

The race also plays a significant role in fundraising for local charities. Last year's race raised $865,000 for 35 different not-for-profit organizations, orgainzers said.
