Athletics: Catalina Marathon - "America's Premier Trail Marathon" - Celebrates 30th Edition

Pacific Sports LLC will celebrate the 30th edition of the Catalina Marathon on Saturday, March 17, 2007 - St. Patrick's Day. Regarded as the top trail marathon in the United States, this marathon is one of the most rewarding courses in the world and one of the island's signature events. In addition to the marathon (26.2 miles), a 5K, 10K and Kids Run with point-to-point ocean views through the beautiful island of Catalina are also available.

What is it about this race that makes it unique? What first comes to mind is the challenging hills and terrain, the spectacular views of the island and Pacific Ocean, and the camaraderie felt among the veteran athletes. The off-road trails from Two Harbors to the finish in Avalon present a challenging elevation gain of over 3,700 feet throughout the course. This marathon is the ultimate trail running challenge. Yes, the hills are daunting and intimidating, but once at the top, the view of the California coastline, the ocean and the buffalo herds and downhill descent are spectacular.

The Catalina Marathon tells so many stories of tradition and legacy. "Buffalo" Bill McDermott's has run all 29 Catalina Marathons, finishing first overall in a record 13 of them. In 1924, 14 buffalo were released on the island as "extras" for a western film, "The Vanishing America". The buffalo remained and multiplied for the sole purpose of encouragement for every runner's fight through the interior island, seldom seen by tourist. Many claim "this will be my definitely be my final year" but something, maybe the buffalo, always bring them back for more. Runner's World named it the "Cult Marathon of the U.S." and that holds a special meaning to many who come from all over the country each year to compete and see old friends.

Whether you are a beginner or a veteran, the Catalina Marathon has countless offerings. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and celebrate the success of finishing the "The Toughest Marathon" as recognized by Competitor Magazine in 2005. Each participant always takes home amazing tales of their quests and returns each year for more.
