Fresh off of his world indoor best at 2000m in Birmingham last Saturday, Kenenisa Bekele will run the 3000m tonight in Stockholm at the GE Galan meeting.
Being in such great form, the reigning world 5000m and 10,000m champion may take a shot at one of the toughest indoor records on the books: Daniel Komen's 7:24.90 set in Budapest in 1998. Komen, a Kenyan, and Bekele's compatriot, Haile Gebrselassie, are the only athletes to break the 7:30 barrier indoors. Komen did it twice, and is the only man to ever get under 7:25 indoors, while Gebrselassie has done it four times. Bekele's best mark indoors is 7:30.77 set in Stuttgart in 2004.
Last Saturday, Bekele ran 4:49.99, a pace of about two minutes and 25 seconds per kilometer. Komen's world record pace for 3000m was 2:28.3 per kilometer, only slightly slower. It's a very tough record, indeed.
