The Reebok New York Grand Prix was elevated to Grand Prix status by the IAAF on Monday, joining the world's top 24 single-day competitions.
The meet, which will be held on Saturday, June 2, at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on New York City's East River, joins Eugene, Oregon's Prefontaine Classic as the only U.S. competitions on the international governing body's global tour calendar. The meet replaces the GE Money Grand Prix in Helsinki, which was downgraded last fall. The highlight of the New York meet's second edition last June was Meseret Defar's world record run in the 5000 meters, where she clocked 14:24.53.
The series kicked off at the Telstra Melbourne Track Classic in Australia on March 2, whose highlights included a 100m/100mH double win for reigning world 100m hurdles champion Michelle Perry of the U.S., Craig Mottram's victory over Boniface Songok in the 5000, and a win in the women's mile by rising Australian middle distance star Lisa Corrigan.
The series resumes on Saturday, April 28 at the Meeting International d'Athletisme in Dakar, Senegal, the only World Athletics Tour stop in Africa.
In addition to prize money --in some cases quite lucrative-- athletes collect points at the 24 competitions to gain entry into the season-capping two-day World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany, on September 22-23.
