Triathlon: USA Triathlon Teams with Prostate Cancer Foundation

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 13, 2007) -- USA Triathlon (USAT) has joined the fight against one of society’s deadliest diseases by partnering with the Prostate Cancer Foundation and naming Athletes for a Cure (AFAC) as the official charity of USAT.

As part of the agreement USAT will assist AFAC in its recruitment of athletes to be involved in fundraising efforts for the charity.

In return AFAC will provide prize incentives for those involved in the program, including airfare to the ITU Age Group World Triathlon Championships in Hamburg, Germany. The USAT Masters and Grand Masters male and female national champions who register with AFAC and raise at least $250 in pledges will be eligible for the offer. AFAC will also offer a $150 reimbursement for bike travel for every $2,000 a USAT athlete raises in donations through the AFAC web- based system.

“We are pleased to team up with an organization that is serious about eradicating a cancer that inflicts one in six men,” said USAT Senior Vice President for Marketing and Communications Tim Yount. “A number of our members jumped on board with the fundraising efforts leading up to last year’s national championship, and we are looking to increase that involvement this year. We hope to make a significant contribution to the battle against this serious disease.”

"Triathletes are intrinsically aware of their part as role models for healthy, balanced and productive lives,” said Scott Zagarino, managing director of sports marketing for Athletes for a Cure. “Athletes for a Cure and USAT have created a platform for every participant to achieve their goals and to inspire others to reach for theirs – all while helping fund research into better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer."

Website: www.usatriathlon.org About Athletes for a Cure and The Prostate Cancer Foundation
Athletes for a Cure, a program of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, is a fundraising and awareness program to assist individual athletes in their quest to raise money for better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. Every dollar raised from the program goes directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is the world's largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research. The PCF has a single, yet urgent goal: to find better treatments and a cure for recurrent prostate cancer. The PCF pursues its mission by reaching out to individuals, corporations and others to harness society’s resources – financial and human – to fight this deadly disease. Founded in 1993, the PCF has raised more than $288 million and provided funding to more than 1,200 researchers at 100 institutions worldwide. The PCF has been a pioneer in the grant making process, simplifying paperwork for grantees, leaving more time for researchers to conduct needed scientific research. The PCF also advocates for greater awareness of prostate cancer and more governmental resources, resulting in a 20-fold increase in government funding for prostate cancer.
