Reigning European Championships silver medalist in the marathon, Viktor Röthlin of Switzerland, broke his own national record for the marathon in Zürich today, running away from the field in 2:08:20 (2:08:19.2). It was also the second fastest time in the world this year.
"He won clearly and solo the last six kilometers," wrote his manager Reto Schorno in a text message to the RRW office.
For Röthlin, 32, it was his second victory at Zürich. His first came in 2005 when he set the the Swiss record of 2:09:56. He was also second in 2003 and fourth in 2005.
Sammy Kurgat of Kenya finished second in 2:11:36, while Nina Podnebesnova of Russian won the women's race in 2:37:00.
