Athletics (RRW): Keflezighi Strikes Two-Year Deal With Powerbar

From David Monti

© 2007 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com As Meb Keflezighi gets ready to make his first appearance at the Flora London Marathon on April 22 he'll, have plenty of energy bars to fuel his muscles, thanks to a two-year deal he has signed with PowerBar. The contract names PowerBar as the exclusive energy bar sponsor to Meb, one of the company's more than 30 sponsored athletes.

"I feel honored to have the support of PowerBar in my pursuit of another Olympic medal," said Keflezighi in a media release. "There is a lot of work that goes on between the Olympics Games, and PowerBar has stepped up to support me during this critical time in my preparation for Beijing. I look forward to having PowerBar as an exclusive member of Team Meb, the support group that allows me to 'BE GREAT.'"

Keflezighi, who divides his time between San Diego and Mammoth Lakes, Calif., is looking for a fast time at London. He's made the podium at both the ING New York City and Boston Marathons, but he his career best time of 2:09:53 is modest by today's standards.

"Coach Larsen and I decided what we needed to do before Beijing and that was to run on a fast course," Keflezighi told RRW in January. "I'm 31 and fit. I feel like I need a fast course."

PowerBar recognizes Keflezighi as a key athlete in their stable, and see themselves as an integral element in his training program. "The partnership with Meb serves as another example of PowerBar's commitment to the proper nutrition for superior performance in our athletes," said Chad Comstock, Senior Sports Marketing Manager. "Elite athletes like Meb require an incredible amount of energy for optimal performance, and we're proud to provide Meb the nutritional tools he needs to help him reach his Olympic goals."
