UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS (09-Apr) -- Mariko Kiplagat Kipchumba of Kenya won the seventh edition of the Utrecht Marathon here today in 2:11:16, smashing Luc Krotwaar's 2003 course record of 2:13:43 by more than two minutes.

Kiplagat, who has also raced as "Mariko Kipchumba," was just six seconds faster than compatriot Sammy Chumba, who finished second in 2:11:22. Chumba was the winner of the Marrakech Marathon on Jan. 28, in 2:11:43. John Rono, another Kenyan, also was within the old course record, taking third place in 2:13:33.

The women's race was won by Joanna Chmiel-Gront of Poland in 2:47:11. She was over two minutes ahead of Remelda Kergyte of Lithuania, who finished second in 2:49:27. No other women finished in under three hours.

The event attracted over 13,000 runners competing at several distances.
