BOSTON (16-Apr) -- Pushing through gusting winds on rain-slickened roads, Lidiya Grigoryeva of Russia broke away from Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia and Madai Perez of Mexico with a 5:10 25th mile to win the 111th Boston Marathon in 2:29:18 (unofficial). It was the slowest winning time here since 1985.
Prokopcuka equalled her second place finish from last year, breaking the tape in 2:29:58. Perez came home third in 2:30:16.
For Grigoryeva, the bronze medalist at last summer's European Championships in the 10,000m, it was her first victory at Boston.
American Deena Kastor fell off of the pace in the 14th mile and finished fifth in 2:35:09 in her Boston debut. Defending champion, Rita Jeptoo of Kenya, finished fourth in 2:33:08.
