Athletics: Henning named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -Walter Henning has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a high school national record in the men's hammer throw Sunday at the St. Anthony's Invitational in South Huntington, New York.

The 2006 USA Junior and Nike Outdoor National champion, Henning won the men's hammer throw with his high school national record-breaking throw if 78.00 meters/255 feet 11 inches, smashing the previous record of 77.16m/253-2 set in 1999 by Jake Freeman. Henning also broke the New York state record in the men's shot put with his heave of 21.02m/68-11.75, bettering Ed Ellis' mark of 20.49m/67-3 from 1982.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
