The athletes have arrived in Victoria from around North America for this Saturday’s inaugural Subaru Victoria International Half-Iron Triathlon at Shawnigan Lake. The gun will sound at 7am to start the athletes on their triathlon adventure of a 2k swim, 90k bike, and 21k run.
Leading the fight in the men’s competition will be Ironman Canada Champion Jasper Blake as he starts his build toward the ultimate challenge of the Hawaii Ironman this October. On the women’s side, the competition will be fierce with American Ironman Champion, Kim Loeffler, Half-iron specialist American Linsey Corbin, and local favourite, Cheryl Murphy, a former National Triathlon Team member.
Kim Loeffler stated, “A quality event like this is an important step in my preparation toward the North American Ironman Championships in Lake Placid and the Hawaii Ironman this fall. And it is a great excuse to come visit Victoria – I have heard so much about it!”
The shorter Sprint Race will also be star studded featuring National Triathlon Team members Brent McMahon (Olympian, Victoria), Carolyn Murray (Canadian National Elite Team, Victoria), and Lisa Mensink (National Team Member, Holland).
The event will be staged against the stunning backdrop of Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley utilizing spectacular Shawnigan Lake, local parks, and the Trans Canada Trail with dramatic views of the historical Kinsol Trestle Bridge. Additional information and live updates of the race will be available at www.lifesport.ca.
