Athletics: Strang Added to 5K Finals at NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Arkansas sophomore James Strang has been added to the finals of the 5,000-meters Friday night at the NCAA Championships, it was announced late Wednesday night.

Strang’s advancement comes on the heels of a protest filed by head coach John McDonnell that was upheld by the NCAA committee. McDonnell filed a protest to allow Strang to advance after he was impeded by Fleet Hower of Georgetown who fell 10 yards from the finish line.

Strang was the final competitor of the day on Wednesday in the 5,000 meters. He finished seventh in his heat, one spot out of an automatic advancement to the finals, with a time of 14:31.97. In the hunt for a top-six finish down the home stretch, which would automatically earn him a spot in the finals, Strang had to jump over Hower of Georgetown who fell 10 yards from the finish line.

The Razorbacks will continue competition on Friday, June 8, with Nkosinza Balumbu in the triple jump prelims at 1:45 p.m. Peter Kosgei will run the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7:10 p.m. while Strang will end the night with the 5K finals at 7:45 p.m.
