FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas freshman javelin thrower Kyle Komarek was
named to the Southeastern Conference's Good Works Team, it was announced by
the conference office this week. The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams
for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to
highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community in
superior service efforts.
Komarek has participated in Book Hogs reading program for two
years and has made three trips to elementary schools this year to encourage
reading to children. At the end of the school year, the Book Hogs have a
party to reward the children who have logged the most minutes reading.
Komarek participated in the event that included 300 local elementary school
children on a field trip to Bud Walton Arena.
Komarek has also made visits to elementary schools for a program that
teaches math and athletics and how they relate to each other in life. In
addition to his work in elementary schools, Komarek has also spent time
making visits to retirement homes in the Fayetteville area and visiting with
elderly residents.
Also for the past two years, Komarek has been an active member of the
Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) which plans events to involve the
Fayetteville community and the Razorback student-athlete community. He has
been elected president of SAAC for the 2007-08 academic year.
Komarek, a native of Overland Park, Kan., finished eighth at both
the SEC and NCAA Mideast Regional Championships during the 2007 outdoor
season. His season-best throw of 211-2 sits at No. 6 on the Arkansas Top 10
list.
