Colorado Springs, CO – Carmichael Training Systems, Inc. (CTS) is pleased to announce that Endurance Runner Dean Karnazes has been nominated for an ESPY award as the Best Outdoor Athlete. Amy Palmiero-Winters, a below the knee amputee, was also nominated in the Best Female Athlete with a Disability category.
This past year Chris Carmichael and CTS Premier Coach Jason Koop were instrumental in preparing and guiding Dean Karnazes through The North Face Endurance 50, a multi-day event during which Karnazes ran 50 marathons, in 50 States, in 50 consecutive days. In addition to Dean’s nomination for the ESPY, he has also be voted Runner of the Year by Competitor Magazine (2006), Top Ten Ultimate Athletes by Outdoor Life Network (2004), and was voted #27 in the TIME poll of the World’s 100 Most Influential People. Dean has also won the Badwater Ultramarathon (2004) and the Vermont Trail 100-Mile Endurance Run (2006).
Amy Palmiero-Winters, coached by CTS Pro Coach Lindsay Hyman for Cycling, lost her left leg below the knee after a motorcycle accident in 1994. After she was told by doctors that she would never run again, Amy ran a 3:04:16 in the 2006 Chicago Marathon on the way to setting the new Below Knee Amputee World Record by more than 22 minutes. The same year she also set the BK World Record for the Olympic Distance Triathlon at the Nautica NY City Triathlon in a time of 2:25:24.
Dean and Amy join an impressive list of ESPY nominees and winners who have been coached by CTS: Ron Williams (2004 – Nominee Best Male Athlete with a Disability – US Paralympic Cyclist); Karissa Whitsel (2005 – Nominee Best Female Athlete with a Disability - US Paralympic Tandem Cyclist) and Lance Armstrong (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 – Winner Best Male Athlete; 2000 – Winner Best Comeback Athlete).
The ESPY’s will take place this coming Sunday, July 15 on ESPN at 9PM Eastern Time.
