Triathlon: The Worlds Largest Triathlon RETURNS TO London’s Docklands

The 2007 Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon

As the Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon continues to grow the 2007 event will see a record number of athletes taking part in the world’s largest swim, bike and run event on the 4th and 5th August 2007. The 11th year of the event sees 12,000 participants compete in this multi discipline event. International elite triathletes, celebrities from the world of sport and TV, and thousands of both new and experienced triathletes, will join together hoping to raise in excess of £2.5 million for charity.

Much more than just an event for keen triathletes, the 2007 Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon is set to attract crowds of 45,000, over the course of the weekend. With a free retail exhibition enclosed inside the ExCeL building, complete with big screen to watch the action on, the London Triathlon has cemented its place at the fore-front of global triathlon.

The elite triathlete field is one of the strongest that has ever been, with competitors flying to London from all over the world including Japan, Germany, France South Africa and Australia including Olympic Silver medallist Bevan Docherty. Athletes representing Great Britain include, current World Champion Tim Don, current UK No.1 Olly Freeman and previous Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon winners Andrea Whitcombe and Stuart Hayes.

“This year’s event is set to be the biggest and the best ever,” comments London Triathlon Ltd Managing Director, Nick Rusling. “Every year we aim to take steps forward, and moving into our 11th year we have continued to build on the strengths we found last year. Our elite field is top notch and with all the support from celebrities and the other keen triathletes we are not only creating a massive event for London in the run up to the Olympics, but also raising a huge amount for charity, with this years’ total expected to exceed £2 million.”

Not just an event for top level athletes, the Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon attracts participants from many different walks of life. Charity fund-raiser Brett Bader is hoping to raise funds and awareness for the NSPCC by completing the bike discipline in a Polar Bear suit and the run course dragging an Arctic Pulk. Alastair Campbell, the former Labour Press Secretary and Chairman of Fundraising at the Leukaemia Research Fund will be participating this year himself, returning after a year off.

Leukaemia Research, alongside DEBRA (the national charity working on behalf of people in the UK with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa) are the official charities of the Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon and are hoping to raise understanding and money through their link with the world’s largest triathlon.
