Athletics: Register for the Grandma’s Minnesota Mile Duluth

Guaranteed Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon Entry to the First 250

(Duluth, Minn.) Looking to secure a spot in next June’s Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon? Now’s your chance! Be one of the first 250 runners to register for the Grandma’s Minnesota Mile Duluth and you will receive a guaranteed entry into the 18th annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon June 21, 2008.

The Grandma’s Minnesota Mile Duluth is Sunday, Sept. 9 in downtown Duluth. Registration is now open and entry forms are available at Austin-Jarrow and other sporting goods stores and fitness centers throughout the Northland. Entry forms may be also be downloaded at www.grandmasmarathon.com. The entry fee is $15 until Sept. 7 and $20 on Sept. 8 and on race day.

“This is a unique opportunity for runners hoping to participate in the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon without needing to enter the lottery system,” says Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma’s Marathon. Registrants will be notified by mail if their entry was one of the first 250 received.

The Grandma’s Minnesota Mile Duluth is the second race in the new Minnesota Mile Series. The first event in the series, Grandma’s Minnesota Mile St. Paul, was held July 11 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and drew nearly 300 registrants. The Duluth racecourse begins on Superior Street near Fitger’s and finishes in front of the Holiday Center.

The Grandma’s Minnesota Mile events consist of four divisions (see division breakdown below). The elite division features a $2,850 prize purse.

The Grandma’s Minnesota Mile Duluth is presented by Sam’s Club and Nike. The event’s major sponsors include Advantage Emblem & Screen Printing, Austin-Jarrow, Caribou Coffee, Fitger’s, Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, WEBC The FAN 560, the Duluth News Tribune and The Northland’s NewsCenter. 9:00 a.m.         Nike Kids Mile
For children ages 8 to 14

9:30 a.m.         All-City Mile
For Recreational Runners with the following projected finishing times: 
Men - 5:46 or longer; Women - 6:46 or longer

10:10 a.m.       Duluth Mile
For Semi-Elite Runners with the following projected finishing times: 
Men - between 4:41 and 5:45; Women - between 5:41 and 6:45

10:40 a.m.       Grandma’s Minnesota Mile
For Elite Runners with the following projected finishing times: 
Men - 4:40 or faster; Women - 5:40 or faster

***Award Ceremony Follows the Races at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites
