Triathlon: Fernandes wins first BG World Championship

Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes won her first Triathlon World Championship in Hamburg today, overcoming a strong international field.

Fernandes had placed herself in the lead group after the swim, and with a solid group of Americans and German athletes she worked hard to stay ahead of the chasing pack which included defending champion Emma Snowsill from Australia.

Exiting for the run, Fernandes immediately took the lead and forged a sizeable lead ahead of Laura Bennett from the USA and German duo Ricarda Lisk and Anja Dittmer. However Snowsill overcame a minute deficit to clock the fastest run split to take second, whilst Bennett held on for her third World Championship bronze medal in four years.

Corus British Triathlon could not match their medal success from yesterday’s junior races where Hollie Avil and Alistair Brownlee won gold and silver medals.

Both Andrea Whitcombe and Michelle Dillon had disappointing swims and dropped back in the third cycle pack to start the 10km run over two minutes behind the leaders. Despite running through the field, Whitcombe could only manage 25th with Dillon just behind in 29th.

Whitcombe said on her performance: “I’m very disappointed with my race. I think both Michelle [Dillon] and I chose the wrong starting positions on the swim pontoon and were never allowed to get up with the leaders. You don’t want to be fighting for the minor places, but we gave it everything on the run and came through to finish strongly.”
