The JUST RUN®, Just Kids 3K is just what it sounds. The Big Sur International Marathon is introducing a new race series – just for kids.
The inaugural kids’ fun run, presented by Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, will be held in Monterey on Saturday, November 10, 2007 in conjunction with the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay. The second race of the series will be on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the same location, as part of the Big Sur Marathon events weekend. The 3K invites all children age five and over along with their family and friends to participate. Additionally, the 3K is a designated “goal race” for children participating in the Big Sur Marathon’s youth fitness program, JUST RUN®.
“We wanted to give kids a race of their own,” said Wally Kastner, race director of the Big Sur International Marathon. “We have been including them in our marathon 5K event, but it’s grown too large and we wanted to create an event just for kids.” Kastner also noted that studies on youth running suggest that children under age nine should not be running distances greater than three kilometers, or just under two miles.
The 3K course will begin and end at Custom House Plaza in historic downtown Monterey and be run along the Recreation Trail and Cannery Row. All participants will receive a finisher’s medallion and a unique aquatic themed t-shirt.
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, presenting sponsor of the event, will be providing family activities and information at the November event, and a larger Family Fun Fair will be featured in April.
