Athletics (RWire): Nippert Leads USA to Team Bronze Medal at World Cup 100K

For the second year in a row, Howard Nippert (Fork Union, Va.) led all Team USA finishers at the IAU 100K World Cup in Winschoten, Netherlands, on Saturday, September 8. Over the 6.2 mile 10-loop course, Nippert's eighth place finish in 6 hours, 49 minutes, 31 seconds led the U.S. team to a bronze medal behind Japan and Russia respectively.

Other Team USA performers included Greg Crowther (Seattle, Wash.), 11th in 6:52:52 and Chad Ricklefs (Boulder, Colo.), 17th in 7:01:10.

In the women's race, Team USA finished fourth, led by Kami Semick (Bend, Ore.), who finished ninth in 7:51:54. Additional U.S. finishers were Devon Crosby-Helms (San Francisco, Calif.), 15th in 8:06:20; Julie Udchachon (Eagle River, Alaska), 16th in 8:14:04; Connie Gardner (Medina, Ohio), 18th in 8:15:14 and Carolyn Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.), 19th in 8:16:17.

Japan swept the individual and team titles led by gold medalists Shinichi Watanabe (6:23:21) and Norimi Sakurai (7:00:27, pending world record).
