Athletics: Canadians net three more medals as IWAS World Championships come to a close

OTTAWA - Brent Lakatos of Dorval, QC raced to two silver medals in the T53 200 and 400 metres this weekend at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Association (IWAS) World Championships. In the 200 metres Lakatos crossed the line in a time of 27.26 behind Pichet Krungget of Thailand who won in 26.51 capturing both the 100 and 200 metres titles. Later Lakatos clenched his second silver medal in the 400 metres.

Windsor, Ontario’s Jessica Matassa won a bronze medal in the T54 200 metres with a time of 31.67. Matassa was 6th in the T54 400 metres in 65.52 with Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland winning the race and capturing her fifth gold medal of the championships.

Stefanie Reid of Kingston, ON placed 5th in the T44 200 metres to close out her competition at the championships. Reid was honoured to be racing on September 16th as many Canadians were taking part in the Terry Fox Run. Reid dedicated her race to Canada’s amputee population. “Whether born without a limb or having acquired an amputation at some point in life, many amputees look to the accomplishment of heroes such as Terry Fox for motivation. I hope that I too can move other Canadian amputees to follow their athletic dreams. I am truly blessed to be able to compete at an international level for my country, a medal would have been nice today and I tried my best, but overall this competition has been a career high for me.”
