TORONTO. September 24th. A record field of 13,000 runners is expected for Sunday's 8th edition of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Half & 5K. This will be a 30% increase over the 2006 numbers. More than 2700 are expected to toe the line for Canada's fastest marathon: the largest-ever field to hit the pavement for a 42km event in the city. Fully 7,000 will run the accompanying Half Marathon. Some 3500 will do the 5K, including many charity runners who will raise over $750,000 for 50 local charities, and 1,000+ Scotiabank MarathonKIDS, who will already have completd 37km in training since going back to school.
Adding to the excitement, the whole event will be covered "live" nationally on television, on CBC Country Canada, and internationally on internet braodband on www.cbcsports.ca --both "firsts" for a Canadian marathon. Up front, Scotiabank is offering $20,000 cash bonuses for new Men's [sub 2:09:55] and Women's [sub 2:26:01] Canadian All-comers records, and the prospects of one if not two pay-outs look strong if the weather cooperates.
Online registration is open until midnight tomorrow, Tuesday the 25th. To register to run, go to: www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com.
