Triathlon: Australian Charlotte Paul wins Port Macquarie Half Ironman, 3 weeks after placing 16th in the Hawaiian Ironman World Champs

Paul was on a high after her first victory as a Professional triathlete in Port Macquarie this weekend. Finishing in a personal best time of 4 hours 31 minutes, 8 minutes clear of second place, with a 24.52 swim, 2.36 bike and a 1.30 run. “In Hawaii, I lost the race from the start, I got boxed in the swim which put me behind from the onset, and didn’t rise to the occasion. I think in efforts to be unintimidated by the field, instead I was totally lacking adrenalin. Disappointed with her Hawaii performance, Paul was fired up to race and took some of her anger out on the challenging Port Macquarie course, taking both the bike and run primes along with the title. “This time I spent the day before watching Rocky movies and when the gun went I was ready to go! No pain!!”

Since turning Professional 3 years ago, this year has been her most fruitful. She puts this down to a successful coaching partnership of husband Kristian Manietta of TriSpecific.com and bike/Ironman guru John Mergler, who have worked to make Paul the complete package. Previously considered weak on the bike, hard work and a new set up has made her bike/run combo a formidable opponent.

The decision to race Port was very last minute since the Ironman World Champs were just 3 weeks ago, but recovery had gone very well thanks to her sponsors Trigger Point Technologies, Hypo2, Compex and local ART providers Performance Health, Newport.

Paul ultimately has her eye on Ironman Western Australia on December 2nd and preparation is on track.

Finishing on the podium here the last 2 years in a row, and with the taste of victory still fresh, she will be hungry to claim her first Ironman title.

With thanks to her sponsors
