Britain’s Leanda Cave and Andrew Johns both took podium finishes at the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon World Championships in Clearwater, Florida on Saturday, rounding out an excellent season for British Triathlon.
Cave, the ITU World Long Distance Triathlon Champion, ran through the field and past compatriot Julie Dibens, to collect the bronze over the 1.2m swim, 56m cycle and half marathon 13.1m run distance – half the traditional Ironman course length.
Dibens had led the race until half way on the run, but just failed to hang on as she was past in the closing few miles by Cave, eventual race winner Mirinda Carfrae from the USA and silver medalist, Canada’s Samantha McGlone. European and World Long Distance Duathlon Champion, Catriona Morrison from Glasgow, rounded out the top five.
In the men’s race, Andrew Johns, the former European Champion, remained in the lead bunch of swimmers and riders before running his way into third. Andy Potts from the USA took victory ahead of Brazil’s Oscar Galindez.
