CHICAGO – December 3, 2007 – Runners from around the world participated in
the Grand Pacifico Marathon in Mazatlán, Mexico, this weekend, which took
place on Sunday, December 2, 2007. This marks the ninth year that Mazatlán,
home of the Pacifico Brewery, has hosted the marathon.
Bob Onyancha of Kenya, won the men’s race in a time of 2:19:50 and Lucy
Njeri of Kenya, won the women’s race in a time of 2:37:07. The winners
received more than $100,000 in prize money and a new luxury car. An
estimated 6,500 runners participated in the event.
The event included both a 26.2-mile marathon race, and a 13.1-mile
half-marathon. A 5K (kilometer) and 10K road race took place on Saturday,
December 1. All races are certified by A.I.M.S. and I.A.A.F. Known for
its breathtaking oceanfront route, sunny weather and international flavor,
the Grand Pacifico Marathon is quickly being recognized as one of the top
destination marathon events in the world. The course stretched down
Mexico’s longest coastal boulevard highlighting the ocean beauty that has
distinguished Mazatlán as “The Pacific Pearl.”
The excitement of the 2007 Grand Pacifico Marathon will also be the focus of
a 30-minute television special that will be aired on various FSN regional
networks in February 2008. A full television schedule will be available in
January on the marathon website (www.maraton.org.
